When he accepted the Republican Party's nomination for president at the GOP convention in 1964, the late Sen. Barry Goldwater famously said, 'Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.' His words did not resonate with the American people at the time, as he lost the election in a landslide to Lyndon Johnson.
